Postcards from Greece

This year we visited two Islands on our trip to Greece. Each having its own beauty. First we visited the highly touristic but all the same lovely island of Santorini, with its spectacular high out-looking views and volcanic landscape. Then we traveled on to the island of Serifos where it appears to be left in a time shadow from 100 years before. People still use Donkey’s for transporting goods,  the landscape is baron, the villages are quite and life is simple. When it comes to painting, Greece has got to be one of my favorite places....

Painting in the Netherlands

Three weeks in the Netherlands was nothing short of a full on art experience and a big leaning curve for me. The Dutch love their art heritage and it was a wonderful opportunity to soak it all up. Back to back invitational painting events in the seaside villages of Noordwijk and Katwijk plus a short stay in the Haag gave me a lot to do and think about as an artist. We visited so many galleries and I worked around the clock, long days where the sun didn’t go down till around the 11th hour pushing and experimenting with new found ideas....

Inside my Sketchbook

Inside my Sketchbook

Just about everywhere I go, my sketch book goes with me. I use it for making quick studies of figures and faces and sometimes when I have the time I scribble down small concept compositional ideas that can help with planing when it comes to later producing a painting. Here are a few recent studies from my latest sketch book. On average I probably spend only a few minutes on each. it can be as quick as 10 seconds but no longer than 5 minutes. California – The Plein Air Convention/Expo First stop was the ‘Plein air Convention and Expo’ in Monterey California. The biggest out door painting event on the planet. I am pretty proud to say that I have been invited to return next year to the world stage as a guest speaker I was working on the stand with Michael Harding (Hand made oil Paints) so not a lot of painting was done during the...

Behind the scenes

Behind the scenes

A lot of work goes on behind the scenes when it comes to painting the pictures I paint. Although most of my current work is done spontaneously and on location there is a lot of work that goes unseen. This work plays a big role in me achieving and moving forward as an artist. So I thought I might share some of this with you. Click images to view larger Live sketching Three or four times a week I spend time out drawing people on the street, in cafes or on the subway. This helps me to get familiar with the human form so that when I want...

Paintings and drawings from Tuscany

A week in the small lofted village of Lucignano in Tuscany provided endless inspiration for my brush and me. I would like to thank, highly accomplished Australian painter and friend Kasey Sealy for the invitation to join him. Lots of painting, drawing and drinking wine with like minded friends made for a week to always remember! Painting on the Greek Island Serifos

Reminded me of my homeland After a few days exploring the sights of Athens, Sara and I joined a group of painters and headed to the Small Island of Serifos, where we had been invited to stay with one of my painter buddies Dimitris Voyiazoglou. 10 days painting and exploring an island that was not unlike my hometown island Rottnest of the Western Australian Coast. Clear turquoise water, a dry grassy landscape basking in the warm sun light, it just felt like home! Gotta do what ya gotta do! During a quick swim I noticed the view from...

Noordwijk Invitational Painting Festival – Holland 2014

Throwing paint with the best of them! The 7 day invitational painting festival on the beach and surrounding areas of Noordwijk in Holland never fails to provide a great time for all. This year I painted alongside some very good friends and brilliant painters, Alberto Valentini, Jean David, and Tony Robinson. Tony took out the Best of Show Award, however I was very excited to be standing along side him as one of the 5 finalists out of such a stellar group of 50 painters. The Spanish Dancer Along with painting landscapes and seascapes,...
